7 Best Celebrity Outfits of 2022, According to Teen Vogue Editors and Fashion Writers
2022 was frankly a chaotic year in celebrity outfits. With styles like Barbiecore, corsets, sheer, neon green, leg warmers, and undone pants trending this year, it’s only understandable that the looks got a little out there. As expected, celebrities pulled out all the stops for major red carpets like the Met Gala and simply, just walking down the street. Here at Teen Vogue we reported on it all, from Kylie Jenner’s super long jeans to Alexa Demie’s subtle My Hero Academia cosplay, Megan Fox’s Vans and gown combo, and Lizzo’s cut out leggings.
Through all these memorable moments, we grew quite fond of some of them in particular. Even as weeks went by and new looks grabbed our attention, we found ourselves thinking about these outfits again and again. Here are some of our favorite celebrity outfits of 2022.
Evan Mock at Vivienne Westwood’s Spring/Summer 2023 show
Although Evan Mock hardly needs an introduction, his portrayal of Akeno “Aki” Menzies in HBO’s Gossip Girl (2021) has put the star under a renewed sartorial spotlight. From the Met Gala to the front rows, in 2022, the star delivered one stylish look after another. However, the famous skater turned up to the Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood SS23 show dressed in one of his best ‘fits yet. Mock offered his own interpretation of the denim-on-denim aesthetics, sporting a dark matching set paired with a cropped corset — by Vivienne Westwood, of course — and Calvin Klein underwear with the waistband in plain sight. The star topped the look with a pearl choker, an Orb necklace, and Off-White sunglasses. He also exchanged his signature pink buzz cut with a Y2K frosted-tips hairstyle. Epitomizing “it boy” like no other, Evan summed up all relevant trends in one look and mastered the art of being — and dressing — cool. — Mayra Peralta, writer
Deepika Padukone at Cannes Film Festival 2022 Closing Ceremony
Cannes Film Festival has been one of fashion’s biggest events of the year for the last 75 years, with stars from across the globe walking the red carpet in their best looks. From Madonna’s debut of the Jean-Paul Gaultier cone shaped bra in 1991 to Bella Hadid’s gilded brass lung necklace in 2021 – Cannes is the place to be bold. This year, Indian actress Deepika Padukone had the best look at the festival’s closing ceremony, wearing a custom made off-white silk saree by Indian designer Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla. The look featured a bustier embedded with crystals, and was accessorized with an ethereal collar piece embroidered entirely with pearls. The saree itself is lined with six feet of ruffles, draped gorgeously over the superstar with a short train behind leaving her appearing absolutely angelic as she glided down the carpet in the celestial get-up. The look was tied together with a simple smokey eye and nude lip, leaving all the focus on saree, truly allowing the clothes to speak for themselves. All of Padukone’s Cannes looks in 2022 featured daring silhouettes with unlikely shapes that commanded attention, and this ruffled saree look decorated with monochrome jewels and gems brought a refreshing kind of magic to the red carpet amidst the sea of black gowns and suits worn by her fellow jury members. — Vandana Pawa, writer
Zendaya at the Euphoria Season Two Premiere
Back in January at Euphoria’s season two premiere, notorious style queen Zendaya delivered the epitome of excellence and elegance by way of a vintage Valentino dress. Not only is the look my favorite celeb outfit of 2022, but it also happens to be a simultaneous tribute to the Linda Evangelista who first debuted it in Valentino’s SS 1992 runway show. We love an archive gown! Timeless and strapless – the black and white striped mermaid dress draped Zendaya’s figure and met her auburn hair in a classic updo. This isn’t Z’s first swoon-worthy Valentino look this year either (remember her Paris Fashion Week AW22 hot pink monochrome ensemble and her SS23 sheer bodysuit under a Valentino blazer covered in the Toile Iconographe logo). Time and time again, her and her longtime stylist Law Roach continue to grace us with the best looks in all of the land! — Sandy Aziz, fashion journalist
Bella Hadid in Archive Versace at Cannes Film Festival
Bella Hadid had so many unforgettable looks this year, but there’s one in particular that I think deserved more attention. Fashion’s sweetheart donning this archive Versace was such a moment that tapped into so many of the hottest trends of 2022. Like to the Gilded Glamour-like corseted bodice, the drop waist is also a throwback, reminiscent of the early 2000s low rise trend that resurged this year. Paired with her subtle brown waves, the semi-sheer fluttery skirt looks so whimsical, appealing to several niche fashion communities. And in a year where nude hues were closet staples, the pale pink tone was so aesthetically to the eye and gave this glamorous gown a low-key feel. So basically, there was something for everyone. Yet, the look all together is classically chic, romantic, and fairytale-like, making it the perfect look for Bella. My only problem is that I wish we could have seen the supermodel walk the red carpet in this gorgeous gown, but then again, the balcony pictures are just so iconic. — Donya Momenian, associate fashion and beauty editor
Kylie Jenner at the Mugler Exhibit of the Brooklyn Museum
Kylie Jenner and Mugler are a match made in couture heaven. I loved that Kylie wore not one but two archival Mugler looks for the opening of the Mugler exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum. (She also wore a sheer bodysuit and cape from the French fashion house.) I think the dramatic, exaggerated silhouette of this corseted gown is such a perfect look for Kylie; she looks amazing in more opulent, luxurious ‘80s-inspired pieces, and this gown packs a punch of those over-the-top elements. The gown itself is relatively simple, but upon closer look it’s packed with the most stunning details: the precise tailoring, the signature Mugler corset, the feathered train and those opera-length gloves, not to mention the truly fantastical headpiece. Something I enjoy about Kylie’s red carpet style is that it’s never boring; she doesn’t always get it right, but she’s not afraid to do something daring, and when she nails it, she really nails it. — Kara Nesvig, freelance writer
Doja Cat at Vogue World
Doja Cat takes my top spot this year for best dressed celebrity. We were all tuned in to the super star musically but now more than ever with her fashion. Her style is always extremely explorative and she’s not afraid to adventure outside of the box. She contradicts fashion norms and really has carved a beautiful lane of her own that’s so fun to watch. Brett Alan, her stylist, has done a wonderful job with her outfits and this all white look during fashion week was a standout for me. The styling was so perfect and the white face paint really added so much to the overall look. This definitely goes down as a all time favorite for me. — Aiyana Ishmael, editorial assistant
Jenna Ortega at the Wednesday Premiere
Netflix’s Wednesday might have premiered towards the end of the year, but it was arguably the show of 2022 — greatly thanks to its sardonic leading woman Wednesday Addams, brought to life by the inimitable Jenna Ortega. Since the series premiered in late November, everyone has become obsessed with Wednesday’s style — but Jenna’s style IRL is just as aspirational. Like the character she portrays, Jenna also seems to veer predominantly toward black — or at least she did for the Wednesday press run. (Call it method acting dressing!) Whether at the Critics Choice Association’s 2nd Annual Celebration of Latino Cinema and Television or in Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the star fully embraced a monochrome palette, favoring lace and a Morticia-esque red lip on occasion. However, one look takes the cake: the Corpse Bride-esque dress she donned to the Wednesday premiere in Los Angeles. Pulled directly from the Versace Spring 2023 RTW catwalk, Jenna’s dress was perfectly crinkled with the ideal balance of lace and satin. The added veil, the black platform heels, and the smokey makeup – which further emphasized Jenna’s sculptured cheekbones — were a killer choice — no pun intended. Suffice it to say, I’ll be thinking about this look until at least 2025 — and don’t judge me if I wear it to my own wedding in the future. — Sara Delgado, contributing editor and freelance writer
