What Would Barbie Think About the Crocs Made in Her Name?
In the trailer for Greta Gerwig’s upcoming film Barbie, Weird Barbie (Kate McKinnon) is talking to the titular Barbie (Margot Robbie). Weird Barbie holds up a pretty pink pump in one hand and a flat Birkenstock sandal in the other. “You can go back to your regular life,” she says while raising up the heel, “or you can know the truth about the universe,” gesturing to the humble comfort sandal. “The first one—the high heel,” Robbie says without question.
Duh. Barbie is a heels gal. It’s why she has permanently arched feet and why shoe maestro Manolo Blahnik has been making custom stilettos for Robbie throughout her press tour. But how would Barbie feel about Crocs? Apparently, she’s giving the ugly-chic shoes her stamp of approval: Today, the rubber shoe brand releases an official Barbie collection in collaboration with Mattel. And it’s all inspired by the stylish doll—including loads of pink, her signature colorway.
The Crocs x Barbie collection includes five styles. The Mega Crush Club ($85) features a glittered midsole and exaggerated platform, a nod to Barbie’s love of heel height. Sure, it may not be a stiletto, but perhaps Barbie could wear it to garden in comfort and style. There’s also the Crush Clog ($75), Classic Clog ($60), Kids’ Cutie Clog ($60), and Cozzzy Sandal ($65)—the latter of which looks pretty similar to the Birkenstocks she’s so offended by in the trailer. But in light pink with dark pink shearling lining? Maybe she’d change her tune and rock them at home.
