Groupism in School
As a student you may be aware of the inns and the outs of the school campus. With the commencement of a new year, one can find that there are close friendship among a particular group of students while some are found to be isolated. Have you wondered why does this occur? This occurs when some students have the ability of attracting the attention of others in a short while.
There are various factors that influence the acceptability of the student in a class or in a group. The most common factor is that of urban sophistication. This is applicable to both the girls and the boys. The factors that influence one’s acceptance are the style of speaking, dressing, interest in music and movies, the physical maturity, popularity with the opposite sex and proficiency in games are a few to name.
Sometimes it is the dominance of the sub groups that tends to establish these criteria. Some students are easily accepted as they are not in a position to pose a threat to others. Most of the new students are accepted easily due to this criteria.
The acceptance automatically makes the student feel secured. But this also poses a danger of complacency. This is because if a student is good in an activity he/ she will never learn other activities. Relation with the opposite e sex is also a criteria among the teenagers. Most of the teenagers involved in the pair relationship seem to add a feeling of self worth. The group mentality also plays a vital role.
Slow learners and slow developers have a relative disadvantage. Most of the students who lack acceptance feel a sense of rejection. This leads to the formation of distinct groups in the class and leaves the child in a state where it is mentally shattered and it lacks confidence.
Teachers, parents can play a significant role in such scenarios. The teacher can call the group and initiate a discussion with them. This will help the isolated children to open up their minds and express their feelings. Parents need to develop a friendly relation with their children. This makes them feel secured and worthy.
