Missouri Teen Pays Off Lunch Debts at Former Elementary School
Thirteen-year-old Dejuan Strickland of St. Louis, Missouri, remembers not being able to afford school lunches when he was in fourth grade. “Seeing all the other kids around me be able to eat their school lunches and I couldn’t was… it was really rough,” he told KMBC 9 News.
Wanting to help other kids in the same situation, Strickland started a GoFundMe campaign. His community responded and he was able to pay off the school lunch debts for every student at his former elementary school. “It’s going to be an amazing feeling,” he said. “Just being able to see that kids can finally be able to eat school lunches and not have to worry about the money or cost of it.” Strickland plans to continue his initiative at other schools to help more students. “I am only one person, but when everyone starts coming together and starts doing this too, it will spark some change.”
