Selena Gomez Thanked Fans After Becoming The Most Followed Woman On Instagram

Selena Gomez wants to hug all of her fans after achieving a major milestone.

The actress and singer became the first woman ever to have 400 million followers on Instagram this week — making her the most followed woman on the social media app. Selena is no stranger to having a widely-followed Instagram — she was the most-followed woman in 2019 before Ariana Grande passed her.

But Selena got to the front again on Friday after taking the title from Kylie Jenner. The reality star and make-up mogul is still close behind with a whopping 382 million followers.

To celebrate breaking the record, Selena posted a carousel — or photo dump — of pictures on Instagram on Sunday thanking her hundreds of millions of fans.

“Wishing I could hug all 400 million of you,” the caption read.

The pictures were mostly throwback pics of Selena with her fans at concerts and meet and greets — spanning back to her teenage years.

While 400 million is wildly impressive, Selena is still behind two soccer stars who hold the top two spots in terms of Instagram followers. Cristiano Ronaldo leads the way with 562 million followers, while Lionel Messi has 442 million followers.

Ironically, Selena’s latest accomplishment comes in the midst of her social media break. She recently told Vanity Fair that she no longer has Instagram on her phone and that her team posts for her. Selena said her break was caused by the “specific and mean” comments, causing her anxiety.

“There are wonderful things about social media—connecting with fans, seeing how happy and excited they are and their stories. But usually that’s filtered through [for me now],” Selena said. “I created a system. Everything I do I send to my assistant who posts them. As far as comments, my team will put together a few things that are encouraging.”
