TEENS – HOW TO EXFOLIATE YOUR FACE THE RIGHT WAY
As a teenager, your skin is constantly repairing itself and because of this, you can have layers of dead skin all over your face. Exfoliation is crucial as it sweeps away the dead cells on your skin.
This crucial technique is arguably the most pampering skin care step you can have in your teens. Without exfoliation, dead cells trapped into the skin surface can lead to clogged pores, dullness, dryness and acne. But if not done properly, exfoliation can also lead to skin irritation and long term damage.
Here Is How To Properly Exfoliate Your Face:
1. Don’t Forget To Cleanse
Before exfoliating, it is important to cleanse your skin to get rid of any dirt, sweat, and makeup. This will prep your skin with a clean base for your exfoliant to work on and will give you the deep clean you are looking for.
2. Choose Your Exfoliant Wisely
The type of exfoliant you should use depends on your skin type. They come in two main types:
Mechanical Or Physical Exfoliants
Facial scrubs and brushes are used to gently lift or scrub the dead skin cells away.
Wet your skin with warm water and a muslin washcloth (a very soft clean washcloth). Warm water opens your pores and makes your skin easier to exfoliate.
Apply the scrub with your fingers and rub it in gentle circles. You can also use a bristle brush, glove or a sponge to the remove layers of dead skin cells. Scrub for 30 seconds-3 minutes (depending on how sensitive your skin is) and wash off with warm water. Gently pat your face dry with a clean soft towel.
Be sure to avoid granules with rough edges which can damage your young skin. Instead, try exfoliants with jojoba beads or sugar.
Chemical Exfoliants
These types of exfoliants are ideal for sensitive skin types as they are less abrasive and less prone to user error. Acids and skin peels are used to dissolve the glue that holds the dead skin cells together.
Apply a small amount (5-10 drops if its liquid) of your chemical exfoliant with a soft washcloth or cotton pad and leave it for about 5 minutes.
3. Exfoliate According To Your Skin Type
Dry And Sensitive Skin
This type of skin can make any step of your skincare routine delicate. Fortunately, exfoliating properly can go a long way towards the reversal of dry skin.
Be extra gentle and stay away from rough/harsh exfoliants which can irritate your skin and cause breakouts.
For mechanical exfoliation, choose a gentle exfoliator with skin-purifying ingredients. Rub a small portion on one area of your face first to see how your skin feels first.
If you have extremely dry/sensitive skin, avoid scrubbing or mechanical methods. This may irritate your skin further. You can also apply a thin coat of moisturizer a few minutes before exfoliating.
Oily Skin
Oily skin can benefit from facial scrubs – you may have an extra layer of buildup that manual exfoliation can remove. This type of skin can also handle daily exfoliation with a gentle chemical exfoliant to help reduce oil in your skin. If you choose to exfoliate daily, continue with your daily morning skincare routine afterward (moisturizers, sunscreen etc)
Normal Skin
If you have normal skin, you can benefit from both methods of exfoliation. Both manual and chemical exfoliants are safe for this skin type. You can also choose a nurturing scrub made for all skin types.
4. Moisturize Immediately
Moisturizing after exfoliating is a very important step as it retains water on your skin and shields it not to lose any moisture.
5. How Often Should You Exfoliate?
The number of times you exfoliate per week also depends on your skin type. If you have dry skin once per week is enough. Oily skin requires more frequent exfoliation and 2 times per week is ideal. For normal skin type, you can exfoliate 1-2 times a week.
Use manual exfoliants only once a week since your skin is still delicate. Chemical exfoliants can be used more often.
6. Exfoliate In The Morning
Your skin renews itself overnight so its best to exfoliate in the morning to get rid of all the dead cells that have accumulated on your skin during the night.
7. Pay Attention To How Your Skin Reacts
Stop scrubbing immediately if your skin begins to redden or feel irritated as you may be having a skin reaction.
CONCLUSION:
Throughout your teenage years, your skin will go through a lot of changes. Exfoliation is one of the best ways to make sure your skin adopts properly through all those changes. If done right, exfoliation will speed up your skin regeneration process to reveal brighter, smoother skin.
