Teens Who Sleep Less than Eight Hours Are More Likely to Be Overweight or Obese

According to new research presented at the European Sleep Society (ESC) Congress 2022, teens who get less than eight hours of sleep a night are at higher risk for a number of health conditions. The study found that among fourteen-year-olds surveyed, those who got less than seven hours of sleep per night were 72 percent more likely to have obesity compared to those who got at least eight hours of sleep. Research indicates that sleep deprivation causes the hormones that regulate metabolism and appetite to become imbalanced, which causes you to feel hungry and crave foods that are unhealthy. The study also found that teens who got less sleep were likely to have higher blood pressure.
