Trump Says the FBI Searched His Mar-a-Lago Home

Former President Donald Trump is having a historically bad case of the Mondays. In the morning, photos reportedly showing notes in his own handwriting flushed down a White House toilet were published, though he denied such photos existed. After lunch, Politico reported a former federal prosecutor was in talks on Trump’s behalf with the FBI in relation to Congress’s January 6th investigation. And by dinnertime, Trump posted a rant about the FBI conducting a “raid” on his beloved Mar-a-Lago home in Florida, confirmed by reporting from CNN and the New York Times. (Per CNN, Trump was not in Florida at the time of the search.)

According to the Times, the search was reportedly focused on boxes containing classified documents that Trump took from the White House to Mar-a-Lago; Trump had “delayed returning” multiple boxes of material to the National Archives for many months until there was a “threat of action.”

In a long-winded statement posted online, Trump said that the FBI raid was “prosecutorial misconduct, the weaponization of the Justice System, and an attack by Radical Left Democrats who desperately don’t want me to run for President in 2024.” The statement makes an offensive comparison to “broken, Third-World Countries” and an inexplicable (if unsurprising) dig at former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. “Nothing like this has ever happened to a President of the United States before,” he helpfully claimed.

And in a classic Trump political move, there was an immediately memorable line that spread across Twitter like wildfire: “They even searched my safe!” TBC on what was in the safe.
