Ariana Grande Slays as Vivacious on RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 15 Premiere

Ariana Grande is a capital P-Performer. Vocals? Check. Costumes? Check. Ponytail? Double check. So it’s no surprise that she entered the RuPaul’s Drag Race Werk Room on the season 15 premiere episode to roaring applause, both on set and online.

The “Thank U, Next” singer first showed herself to the contestants in a reveal that true Drag Race fans and the other Queens definitely recognized. She walked in, dressed in what you might expect a 12-year-old cartoon character to wear trying to sneak into an R-rated movie — a mannequin with a hollowed out chest where she opened up to reveal herself. It was a nod to a reveal done by former Drag Race queen, Vivacious, and her mannequin named Ornacia.

“Mother has arrived,” Ariana said, keeping true to Vivacious’ source material. The other queens reacted in awe and excitement as they processed their surprise. The celebrity guest judge, meanwhile, showered them with praises upon arrival: “I think drag is the most infectious and joyous art form that there is,” Ariana said. “Thank you guys for bringing so much joy to the lives of the Drag Race fans and to everyone.”

“And thank you for giving us ‘Break Free,'” Luxx said, without missing a beat.

Vivacious herself shared an Instagram video of the big moment, writing, “I’ve been holding onto this secret since the summer. I am always in good company. Thank you @arianagrande for making this the moment of my life ❤️🌹🌹🌹🌹🙏 ( huge fan ) Are y’all gagging? I have always been referenced every season since s6. Thank you @rupaulsdragrace and family. For always looking out for me. Now heaven above get me to ALL Stars.”

Though not a drag artist herself, Ariana Grande likely feels at home as a guest on Drag Race. As a performer, she knows all too well what goes into a performer’s persona, a flashy statement-making costume, and hair extensions that don’t need to look natural, just expensive. Last fall, she and Drag Race Season 13 alum Gottmik got together on r.e.m. beauty’s YouTube channel to chat drag and beauty. Gottmik showed up in a ponytail and a beat that can only be interpreted as an Ariana drag look of their own.
