If you have a Crunchyroll account, you’re probably already familiar with the Anime Awards.

Established in 2017, the annual Crunchyroll Anime Awards set out to “honor the creators, musicians, and performances across the anime industry.” Translation: the Anime Awards are the place to go if you are in need of a best-of-anime list, vetted by both a jury of experts in the field and fans themselves.

Last year, the Crunchyroll Anime Awards traveled all the way to Tokyo for the very first time to celebrate the epicenter of anime, and the 2024 edition of the event is following suit. As the ceremony draws near, the anticipation for Anime of the Year is palpable — who will be the lucky winner this year? Past victors include renowned titles like Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Attack on Titan, Jujutsu Kaisen, and Made in Abyss, to name a few.

So, what qualifies an anime to be eligible for the Anime Awards? Like other international awards like the Emmys, the Anime Awards also have eligibility rules. Firstly, contenders need to be an animation project with its primary production taking place in Japan. The eligibility period for the 2024 Anime Awards includes movies or shows aired between October 2022 – September 2023. Furthermore, “at least one episode” of the anime must have “had its initial legal distribution outside of Japan in 2022 or 2023.”

Voting for the 2024 Crunchyroll Anime Awards, officially titled the 8th Crunchyroll Anime Awards, opened on January 17, 2024. Since then, fans have been eagerly awaiting to see if their fave shows have managed to win any of the categories.
