Selena Gomez and Her Sister Gracie Laugh Off Body-Shaming Comments After the Golden Globes

Selena Gomez can only laugh. The night of the Golden Globes, Selena and her 9-year-old sister Gracie Elliot Teefey reported live from her car in an Instagram livestream. 

In a clip from the stream that was recorded and uploaded to TikTok, Selena says, “I’m a little bit big right now because I enjoyed myself during the holidays,” before looking to Gracie, and, with a laugh, asking, “Right? But we don’t care.”

Red carpets are always moments where celebrities are particularly vulnerable to public examination and scrutiny. The night of the Golden Globes, outlets have reported that Selena may have been responding to online criticism about her weight that night. Whether the comment is directed at anyone in particular or something that she felt she needed to defend, we know Selena has been no stranger to public scrutiny. In Selena’s documentary, My Mind & Me, her relationship to public discourse was shown heavily, from her feeling cheap after a press junket to her anxieties about her public perception.

The singer, who has always had a complicated relationship to fame and social media attention, has just recently returned to Instagram after a hiatus. Back in 2021, she even told Vogue that she would send pictures and captions to her assistant to post on her behalf so that she could avoid spending time on Twitter and Instagram. Last year, she went on IG Live to say, “Honestly I don’t care about my weight because people b*tch about it anyway. You’re too small. You’re too big. That doesn’t fit.”
