To ward off potential competition
Men are as insecure in a new relationship as women are and will go to any length to ward off any potential competition. If your boyfriend feels and acts in a strange way during the initial stages of the relationship and generally tries to keep you away from his group of friends or other boys then he has a vested interest in it. He will try and whisk you away whenever there are dashing boys around you. This does not necessarily mean he loves you. He is just being cautious and does not want any unnecessary competition.
